- As Senate confirms Apex Bank Gov, 4 Deputy Govs
BY EDMOND ODOK – Against the backdrop of disturbing claims that politicians had a field day with undue influence during the immediate past Godwin Emefiele-led tenure at the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), the new Governor, Dr Yemi Cardoso, says under his watch, the apex bank will truly act independent of external control.
Cardoso gave the assurance that the CBN would be insulated from external and political pressure under his leadership during his screening by the Nigerian Senate on Tuesday.
According to him, the new management would ensure that politicians do not distract them in the performance of their statutory responsibilities to the country, adding; “It is important that we, who are considered for this position today, understand that this is a position of trust.
“With that comes a huge responsibility to meet up with that trust. I know that a lot of time and effort has gone into choosing the people who are standing here for nomination today.”
Responding to Senate President Godswill Akpabio’s question if he would be controlled, influenced, and hijacked by politicians, Cardoso said; “As far as I am concerned, under my leadership, we will not be hijacked by anybody.
“The idea is to ensure that we do what is right when it is right, and how it is right. We’ve seen what the effect of not doing right has been, and we do not intend for that to be repeated.”
Senate Confirms CBN Gov, Cardoso, 4 Deputy Govs
Meanwhile, the upper Legislative Chamber on Tuesday confirmed Dr. Olayemi Michael Cardoso as the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).
Also enjoying the Senate’s goodwill were Mrs Emem Nnana Usoro, Mr Muhammad Sani Abdullahi Dattijo, Mr Philip Ikeazor, and Dr Bala M. Bello recently nominated by President Bola Tinubu as Deputy governors of the apex bank.
All the new CBN nominees were confirmed following their screening in the Committee of the Whole as the Senators resumed plenary on Tuesday, September 26, after their two months recess.
Cardoso and the four deputy governors were nominated by Mr President on September 15, 2023, to take charge of the Apex Bank’s affairs for a term of five years each at the first instance, pending their confirmation by the Senate.
