Assistant Inspector General of Police in charge of Zone 11 comprising Oyo, Osun and Ondo State, AIG Dan Bature, has warned policemen fond of collecting vehicle particulars from motorists for checking to desist from such unprofessional practice.
AIG Bature also warned policemen against blocking high ways, stressing that police patrol vehicles are not supposed to be toll gates.
The AIG pointedly declared the practices as illegal and unprofessional, stressing that it is wrong for a police officer to be checking vehicle particulars on the highways.
The police boss who stated these in Ibadan, Oyo State Capital during a two-day familiarisation visit to the State, stressed that the duty of the police was not to check vehicle particulars, but to ensure safer roads.
Bature said that the Inspector General of Police, IGP Olatunji Disu, is committed to changing the negative image of the Nigeria police as part of measures to boost the anti-corruption war of the Federal Government.
Bature therefore advised police officers that are unable to key into the laudable initiatives of the IGP to honourably resign from the Force.
He explained that it was as a result of complaints and illegal activities of some police officers that the Police Officers Monitoring Team was established.
In the words of Bature; “The Inspector General of Police is determined to improve on your welfare and pursue the increment of your salary, but this can only be achieved when the people have good perception about the Nigeria Police”.
