…Wants only career officers as CG

BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – Precisely two months after the serious face-off between it and the Comptroller General of the Nigerian Customs Service (NCS), Col Hameed Ali over his wearing of official uniform, the Senate on Thursday passed a bill scrapping the Governing Board of the Customs.

The bill, when passed into law, also compels the President to appoint from within the Service a Comptroller General whose nomination shall be subject to confirmation by the Senate.

Accordingly, the Governing Board of the NCS shall be replaced with a Commission that shall oversee the administration of the Service.

The bill also states that the proposed Commission shall be headed by a Chairman, who must have retired as either career Comptroller-General or Deputy Comptroller-General.

The Commission’s Chairman, to be nominated by the president, shall have a tenure of four years and renewable only once.
