Governor Sani Bello of Niger State on Monday left many party faithful and political observers wondering over the real situation in the All Progressives Congress (APC), as he declared that he has been acting as the National Chairman of the Party’s Caretaker Committee “for a while now”.
Bello told journalists in a chat after presiding over a meeting of the APC’s National Caretaker committee at the party’s national secretariat in Abuja that he has been incharge of the party in acting capacity.
He however refused to elaborate on the matter when asked if he has taken over the APC’s leadership, saying; “Acting chairman, I have been acting for a while since the chairman travelled.”
When pressed further with questions by journalists, Bello said; “No comment”.
There had insinuations that President Muhammadu Buhari before travelling to the United Kingdom for medical leave, allegedly approved the removal of Governor Mai Mala Buni of Yobe State as the Chairman, of the APC Caretaker/Extraordinary Convention Planning Committee (CECPC).
Buni was alleged to have been replaced with Governor Abubakar Sani Bello of Niger State.
It was gathered that some powerful forces within the APC made up of governors on the platform of the party met with President Buhari and complained about the antics of Buni which were clearly not in the interest of the party particularly with regards to the scheduled national convention.
The aggrieved party leaders were of the view that Buni was not ready to organize any convention as he was not willing to leave the position of Caretaker Chairman pending the presidential primaries of the party.
