Court Orders PDP To Constitute Caretaker Committee For South South Zone
A High Court of Bayelsa State sitting in Yenagoa, has ordered the Acting National Chairman, Amb Iliya Damagum, and the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to constitute a Caretaker Committee for the Party in the South South geopolitical Zone.
The Court presided over by Justice E. G. Omukoro, in a landmark ruling in Suit No: BYHC/YHC/CV/99/2025, delivered on Friday March 7, 2025, ordered the PDP to constitute the Caretaker Committee for the South South.
The order was predicated upon a motion filed by the trio of Hon Solomon Agwanana, Hon Ben George Odon and Hon Gesiye Isowo (For themselves, and as representing the State Working Committee of the Peoples Democratic Party, Bayelsa State Chapter).
The court in granting the Exparte Injunction, directed the 1st Defendant – Amb Iliya Damagum, to constitute a Caretaker committee, not later than Monday, March 10, 2025, for the South-South Zone of the Peoples Democratic Party with whom the Claimants can liaise with in the management of the affairs of the Party pending the hearing and determination of the motion on notice.
The court’s decision which is aimed at resolving the leadership crisis within the party’s South South structure, also strengthened the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Party to continue to oversee all activities of the Party in line with its Constitution as amended in 2017.
A statement by the PDP said that this development is expected to have significant implications for the Party’s presence in the South South Zone, following the directive of the Court to the national leadership of the party to comply with its order.
The statement further said that the Bayelsa State High Court has demonstrated its commitment to upholding the rule of law and ensuring that political parties operate within the bounds of the constitution and their own internal regulations.
