BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, GOMBE – The ongoing power tussle in Kumo East Ward chapter of the ruling All Progressive Congress (APC) has consumed the Member representing Akko Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Usman Kumo for alleged anti-party activities.

He has therefore been suspended indefinitely by a faction of the ruling party in Kumo East, Akko Local Government Area of Gombe State.

Announcing the legislator’s suspension, APC Ward Chairman in the area, Musa Barde alleged that the Honourable member has demonstrated do much disdain for the Ward Executive members of the patty by refusing to carry them along in fulfilling his electoral promises and discharging his responsibilities to the constituents.

Barde described the lawmaker’s action as an anti-party activity that is retarding the progress of APC in the area.

But in a swift reaction, other Ward Executives members of the party have protested to the APC National Chairman, Comrade Adams Oshiomhole, over the alleged suspension of the lawmaker, describing it as not only uncalled for but also an effort in futility.

For now, both factions are involved in a fierce leadership tussle leading to the current crisis that is threatening to destroy the party in Kumo East Ward.

Briefing newsmen in Gombe on their protest letter to the National Chairman of APC, Secretary of the Ward Executives, Malam Shuaibu Adamu, said the alleged suspension of Hon Usman Kumo by the ward chairman, was unconstitutional and does not reflect the position and thinking of all Executive members at the Ward level.

Malam Adamu insisted that Kumo was not given fair hearing by the seven man fact finding committee constituted to investigate issues raised in the petition against him.

The faction said in its protest letter thus: “Mr Chairman Sir, we want to assure you that as party officials of APC in Kumo East Ward, we are not aware of any complaints against the serving member according to Article 21 of the APC constitution sub-section B.

“The alleged seven man fact-finding committee constituted and inaugurated by our Ward chairman to investigate petition against Hon. Kumo has no endorsement from party officials at the ward level”.

According to the Ward Secretary, “it is important to note that Kumo has not been invited to appear before any disciplinary committee or found him guilty, hence, we view the alleged suspension from the Party as an attempt to assassinate his character as well as raise false accusations against him with a view to damaging his reputation and credibility”.

While assuring the APC’s National Secretariat that the embattled lawmaker remains a loyal and law abiding party member, the Ward Secretary urged the National Chairman to disregard any letter from the Ward Chairman to the contrary.

“Mr Chairman Sir, it will not be out of place for your office to make further investigations as we are ready to appear before any fact-finding committee to prove our position”, the petitioners wrote.

Amid the crisis, the Ward Chairman, Musa Barade had on Wednesday addressed a letter suspending Hon. Kumo to the APC National Chairman, accusing the legislator of anty-party activities and infamous conduct in the performance of his official duties among other accusations.
