Moving a motion for Ayambem’s impeachment, the member representing Calabar South Constituency 1, Hon Efiong Ekarika listed other offences to include incompetence, highhandedness and self centeredness leading to his failure in promoting members’ welfare.

The sacked Speaker was also accused of having a craze for property acquisition in locations that include Abuja, and Lagos, as well as a sprawling mansion situated in the new development area known as Summit Hills within Calabar Metropolis.

The motion to remove Hon Elvert Ekom Ayambem, who represents Ikom II state constituency, was supported by 17 members out of 20 who were present during plenary.

Shortly after announcing the Speaker’s impeachment, the Assemblymen addressed the media citing Order 24 of the House rules and Section 92 of the constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria to support their action.

While pledging loyalty to Governor Bassey Edet Otu and his ‘People’s First’ administration, the aggrieved Assemblymen said their action should not be misconstrued to mean disloyalty to the able way the governor is managing the State’s affairs.

On the election of a new speaker to fill the vacant position, the member representing Bekwarra State constituency hinted that they are still consulting among themselves and party stalwarts on who the cap would fit and urged for calm among their constituents.

Forefront News noted that following Ayambem’s impeachment some persons were engaged in a struggle to snatch and take possession of the mace before the situation was immediately brought under control.

Meanwhile, it has been confirmed that the Governor, Senator Bassey Otu has been out of the State on official engagements for over a week now.
