Police nap 15 suspected cultists
One person died and many others were injured as suspected members of Aiye and Buccaneer confraternities clashed at Ikosi area of Ketu in Lagos state.
In their fight for supremacy over alleged collection of levies from fruit sellers at Ketu market, at least 15 members of both cult gangs were arrested by the police.
The cult battle, which began around 6am on Wednesday, March 17, 2021, saw several commercial tricycles and motorcycles burnt, leading to business activities being grounded in the area.
Only the timely intervention of mobile policemen and policemen from the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) brought the situation under control and restore normalcy.
According to Police reports, two locally made pistols and several rounds of ammunition were recovered from the suspects, while those injured were rushed to a nearby clinic where they were treated and discharged.
Confirming the incident, Public Relations Officer of Lagos State Police Command, Muyiwa Adejobi, said normalcy has already returned to the Ikosi/Ketu area of Lagos State after the clash.
Adejobi said among the 15 persons arrested are suspected members of Eye, Aiye and Buccaneer while two locally made pistols, some live cartridges and assorted charms were also recovered from them.
The Police spokesman said; “The Commissioner of Police, Lagos State, Hakeem Odumosu, deployed policemen including the Rapid Response Squad (RRS) and Taskforce to the area to quench the crisis and restore normalcy to the area.
“He also ordered that the suspects be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department, Panti, Yaba for discreet investigation.
“Preliminary investigation revealed that the crisis was connected to the revenue generation at the Ketu fruits market, and efforts are in top gear to apprehend other fleeing members of the gangs that orchestrated a crisis in the area.”
Adejobi said the Commissioner of Police has resolved to effectively fight crimes and criminality, especially cultism, in Lagos, adding that all legal measures would be deployed to defeat cultism and cults-related activities in the state.
