- Cites health reasons for decision
BY EDMOND ODOK – The Minister of Defence, Alhaji Mohammed Badaru Abubakar, has resigned his appointment as a member of the Federal Executive Council (FEC), with immediate effect.
In a letter addressed to President Bola Tinubu, and dated 1st December 2025, Abubakar said he was quitting the position based on health grounds.
Confirming the development, a statement by Special Adviser to the President on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, said President Tinubu has accepted the resignation and thanked Abubakar for his services to the nation.
The statement further said, “President Tinubu will likely inform the Senate of Badaru’s successor later this week.”
The 63-year-old Badaru Abubakar was a two-term governor of Jigawa state from 2015 to 2023. His appointment as a Minister by President Tinubu came on August 21, 2023.
Meanwhile, his resignation is coming against the backdrop of Mr President’s declaration of a national security emergency, with plans to elaborate on its scope in due course.
