Detention, Prosecution Of Minors – Severe Suppression Of Freedom – Amnesty International Says
…Tasks Tinubu to free the detained minors immediately
Amnesty International (AI), has described the detention and prosecution of some minors that participated in the August 2024 nationwide protest against hunger and #BadGovernance as one of the most severe suppressions of freedom of assembly in recent memory.
The human rights organisation in a statement on its X handle, sent a strong worded message to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu-led Federal Government over the detention and prosecution of some minors since August when the malnourished minors were arrested from different States of the federation.
Amnesty International specifically said that putting minors through horrifying detentions is a grave attempt to silence young voices.
It therefore tasked President Tinibu to act swiftly and release all detained minors unconditionally, stressing that protest is a fundamental right, especially in the face of issues like hunger and corruption.
