BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The controversy surrounding the arrest, release and possible re-arrest of Senator Dino Melaye by the Nigeria Police has refused to go off the news wave.
Senator Dino, who had tweeted in the morning over his arrest by men of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has tweeted again saying over 30 heavily armed fierce looking mobile police men have stormed his residence situated in Maitama, Abuja.
The Senator said all roads leading to his house have been condoned off by the heavily armed mobile police men who blocked all entry & exit roads.
He further said that the armed men are currently laying siege in and around his house.
Earlier in the day, officers and men of the Nigeria Immigration Service released Senator Dino Melaye after they arrested and prevented him from traveling to Morocco on an official assignment.
The officers of the Nigerian Immigration Service had arrested him at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport.
It was gathered that attempts made by officials of the Nigeria Immigration Service to hand him over to the police was rebuffed as the police which had declared him wanted in March refused to arrest him.
Senator Melaye’s Tweet read: “I have just been arrested at the international wing of the Nnamdi Azikiwe airport on my way to Morocco for an official engagement sponsored by the Federal Govt after checking in.”
Melaye said he had a brawl with officers trying to seize his traveling documents before being cycled by a band of police officers.
“I was disembarked and asked me to go to their office (at the airport). They snatched my passport but I snatched my thing back from them. I got it back! I’m still here with them. They circled me and said they were waiting for further instructions from the police.”
“No retreat no surrender. Talk we must, he said.
The Commissioner of Police, Kogis State Command, Ali Janga, last month declared Melaye wanted alongside one Mohammed Audu, son of a former governor of the state, Abubakar Audu.
Police said the duo were placed on the Interpol watch list for allegedly providing false information to the police in relation to an alleged attempt on Melaye’s life last year.
