The trio of Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic on Friday, May 17, 2024 gave vent to their quitting the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), by announcing their readiness to for the formation of a confederation.

The decision of the three West African countries under military rule is taking place after they turned their backs on their former colonial ruler, France to seek closer ties with Russia.

The Foreign Affairs ministers of the three countries met in Niamey, the capital of Niger Republic on Friday during which they agreed on a text establishing the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Announcing the birth of the Confederation, the Foreign Affairs Minister of Niger Republic, Bakary Yaou Sangare, while reading the final statement, declared that the objective of the meeting was to finalize the draft text relating to the institutionalisation and operationalisation of the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES).

Sangare specifically said the text would be adopted by the Heads of State of the three countries at a summit.

Also speaking, the Malian Foreign Minister, Abdoulaye Diop after meeting with General Abdourahamane Tiani, the Head of Nigerien military regime, said that it is very clear that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born today.

In the words of Diop; “We can consider very clearly, today, that the Confederation of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) has been born”.

The third foreign minister at the meeting was Burkina Faso’s Karamoko Jean-Marie Traore, who acknowledged the resolutions reached at the meeting.

The Sahel region has been subjected to deadly jihadist violence for years for which they pointedly accused France of not being able to curb.

Burkina Faso, Mali and Niger Republic declared late January 2024 they were quitting The Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS), which they accused of being under the influence and control of French and vowed to create a new bloc that would address their peculiar needs.
