Edo 2024: Labour Party Gives Shaibu Tight Rope To Walk On

The Edo State chapter of the Labour Party (LP) has given a stringent condition to the embattled Deputy Governor of the state, Mr Philip Shaibu if he is to be welcomed into the party.

The condition is coming against the backdrop of reports that clearly indicate the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the State have taken side with Governor Godwin Obaseki against Shaibu following the crisis of confidence between the governor and his deputy that hitherto wielded so much political power.

Similarly, Shaibu’s erstwhile political godfather, Senator Adams Oshiomhole has come hard on the Deputy Governor over his alleged apparent disloyalty, saying that he (Shaibu) would not be welcomed into the APC.

Following insinuations that Shaibu is now casting his political net into the river of the Labour Party, Chairman of the party in the State, Mr Kelly Ogbaloi said the embattled deputy governor cannot just join the party without meeting a specific condition.

Ogbaloi, who stated the position of the Party at the weekend at a meeting with gubernatorial aspirants, assured that the party will present a candidate that is generally acceptable to the populace.

Ogbaloi specifically said that since the Labour Party seems to be one of the last platforms Shaibu wants to hang on to, he needs to meet and fulfil just a single condition before he can be accepted to join the party.

The LP chairman, therefore, declares that Shaibu must first pull off his deputy governorship rank to qualify to join the party, adding; “If Philip Shaibu is coming to our party, he will not be coming as Deputy Governor but as an individual like any other person. The party is open to everyone in Nigeria. The doors are open to anybody who want to come in to contest the election.

“We want our Party, the Labour Party to win the Edo governorship election in 2024 and to win the election, we must have a candidate that will be generally acceptable to the people of Edo State”.
