Edo Dep Gov, Philip Shaibu Walks A Tight Rope As Assembly Serves Him Impeachment Notice

The days and weeks ahead look quite troubling for the Deputy Governor of Edo State, Philip Shaibu as the State House of Assembly on Wednesday, March 6, 2024 issued him an impeachment notice.

Shaibu’s impeachment notice might not be unconnected to what was considered an embarrassment he caused the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) and the State government by organising a parallel Party Primary where he was purportedly declared the Governorship candidate of the Party for the September 2024 governorship election in the state.

The embattled Shaibu also carried out his anti-Governor Godwin Obaseki’s moves as he warned the PDP to either grant him recognition as the validly nominated Governorship candidate of the Party or should be prepared to face the consequence of losing the election.

Shaibu did not stop at that, as he also stormed the National Secretariat of the PDP in Abuja a week later and demanded for the Certificate of Return or he would proceed to the court to scuttle the Party primary.

The face-off between Governor Obaseki and his deputy, Philip Shaibu, who was once considered the most powerful Deputy Governor in the country became a known to the public last year when Shaibu indicated interest in running for the governorship, a development that was seen as Obaseki as deliberate attempt to distract his administration from carrying out its lined up programmes.

The embattled Shaibu had hinted last week of plans by Governor Obaseki to get him impeached for daring to contest for the Governorship ticket of the PDP

Forefront News gathered that 22 of the 24 members of the House of Assembly signed the impeachment notice against Shaibu and have lined up a plethora of infractions and financial misdemeanour allegedly committed by him when he superintended over some Ministries and agencies of the state government.
