EFCC Arrests Willie Obiano At Lagos Airport

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested the immediate past Governor of Anambra State, Mr Willie Obiano at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport (MMIA), Lagos.

Obiano was reportedly picked up at about 8.30 pm on Thursday, March 17, 2022 while on his way to Houston Texas in the United States.

Though details of the arrest are still sketchy, inside sources claimed that it may not be unconnected with allegations of financial impropriety and money laundering during his eight years tenure as the Chief Executive of Anambra state.

Competent sources hinted that the former governor was nabbed by eagle-eyed EFCC operatives while trying to board a Houston-bound flight out of the country following his successful hand-over to the new Governor Chukwuma Soludo in a ceremony where his wife’s slapping of Mrs Bianca Ojukwu, widow of the late Igbo leader, Dim Chukwuemeka Odumegwu Ojukwu made headlines.

Confirming Obiano’s arrest, the Spokesperson for the anti-graft agency, Wilson Uwujaren, said the ex-governor is being detained in Lagos pending further actions against him.

Late November last year, reports appeared in the Nigerian media that the EFCC had placed him on its watch list while still serving as governor.

However, the Anambra state government had then described the reports as ‘laughable’ given that since his assumption of office in 2013, the then Governor has never been linked with any financial impropriety or fraud-related controversy.
