…Calls for better working conditions for journalists
The Chairperson of the House of Representatives Press Corps, Comrade Grace Ike, has said that the recently concluded month of Ramadan symbolized a time of reflection, compassion, and generosity, where individuals and communities come together to support one another and extend kindness to those in need.
Ike also said that in the spirit of the sacred month and celebration of Eid el-Fitr, it was crucial to address the challenges faced by journalists and ensure they receive the support and recognition they deserve.
Ike, who is also the Vice Chairman of the Correspondents Chapel of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT chapter, therefore advocated for improved working conditions for journalists.
Ike, who spoke while joining the Muslim community to celebrate the end of Ramadan and the Eid el-Fitr celebration, tasked media organizations, government agencies, and other relevant stakeholders to take concrete measures towards enhancing the welfare of journalists, whom she described as the bedrock of democracy.
Ike said; “On this Eid el-Fitr, I extend my heartfelt congratulations and warm wishes to Nigerian Muslim journalists and all citizens celebrating this joyous occasion”.
Ike noted that journalists play a critical role in the society by serving as the watchdogs of democracy and guardians of truth.
In her words; “Despite their indispensable contributions, many journalists continue to face inadequate pay, long hours, job insecurity, and even safety risks in the course of their work.
“By investing in the well-being of journalists, we not only uphold the principles of justice and equity but also safeguard the integrity and independence of the media, which is essential for the functioning of a healthy democracy.”
While acknowledging the current economic challenges faced by journalists and Nigerians in general, Comrade Ike encouraged everyone to embrace the values of empathy, solidarity, and charity.
“Wish you and your families a blessed Eid filled with happiness, love, and prosperity. Eid Mubarak!” she said.
