Baring unforeseen circumstances, former Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasir Ahmed El-Rufai is expected to regain freedom today and walk out of the custody of the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC).

This followed the spirited efforts by family members and associates of the former governor that commenced working on perfecting his bail conditions as ordered by the Federal High Court sitting in Kaduna.

The Court had on Tuesday, April 14, 2026, granted El-Rufai bail in the corruption case instituted against him by the ICPC.

The trial judge, Justice Rilwanu Aikawa, while ruling on the bail, directed that El-Rufai should remain in custody until the conditions are met.

The bail conditions as granted by the court included a N200 million bail bond with two sureties, of which one of the sureties is required to provide a Certificate of Occupancy for a landed property.
Other conditions included that one of the sureties must be a respected elder in Kaduna State, who would be verified by the Kaduna State Council of Elders.
The court also ordered that El-Rufai and his counsel must not grant interviews regarding the case pending the conclusion of the trial and that El-Rufai must report to the Independent Corrupt Practices and Other Related Offences Commission (ICPC) on the first day of every month.

El-Rufai is also expected to deposit his passport with the court.

Speaking to journalists after the ruling, a chieftain of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and a close ally of the former governor of Kaduna State, Hayatudeen Lawal Makarfi, described the bail conditions as outrageous.

Lawal said; “The bail conditions are many, from landed properties to N200 million to someone who has a traditional title, and so many conditions, numbering almost ten or more”.
