The House of Representatives has directed the Nigeria Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC), and the Distribution Companies (DISCOs), to reverse the hike in electricity tariff for Band ‘A’ customers.
This directive was issued on Tuesday, July 23, 2024 following the adoption of a report presented by the House Committee on Power.
NERC had announced a hike in electricity tariffs affecting Band ‘A’ customers, who are presently paying N225 per kilowatt and expected to enjoy 24 hours minimum electricity supply per day but, for which the Discos have failed to meet despite the humongous increase that have placed many residential homes, business and commercial organisations in difficulties.
The House also resolved to probe the unaffordable hike in tariff pending an investigation.
While presenting the report of the Committee on Power, its chairman, Hon Victor Nwokolo, said that there was no gain saying that Nigerians cannot afford such an astronomical new tariff.
The Committee’s recommendation for a return to status quo was unanimously adopted by the whole House.
