BY TEMI OHAKWE, ABUJA – The Federal Government on Monday announced that it has released N40 billion for the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), for payment of earned allowances of academic and non-academic staff.

Minister of Labour and Employment, Dr. Chris Ngige, who announced this, also said that the Federal Government may soon release another N30 billion as revitalisation fund to universities by the end of January.

The government had approved N20 of the N40 billion for payment of earned allowances of members of the Senior Staff Association of Nigerian Universities (SANU), Non-Academic Staff Union (NASU) and Technologists.

Even though, the non-academic staff have given notice of an industrial action over the sharing formula used by the National Universities Commission (NUC), the Federal Government however explained that when a similar payment was made in 2019, they got N8 billion.
