A masterclass in perseverance saw Nigeria’s Flamingoes beating their Mexican counterparts to secure a glittering ticket to the quarter-finals as the Round of 16 concluded at the ongoing FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup Morocco 2026.

The Nigerian girls dismantled their Mexican counterparts with a clinical goal in each half to set up a tantalizing showdown with Venezuela in the last eight round of the global youth tournament.

The opening exchanges belonged entirely to El Tri, who burst out of the blocks with vibrant intensity and early intent. All eyes were on their talismanic captain, Citlalli Reyes, who found herself at the heart of Mexico’s most menacing threats. The star forward first unleashed a ferocious strike from the edge of the eighteen-yard box, only to see it agonizingly deflected wide.

Moments later, Reyes seemed destined to break the deadlock after bursting clean through on goal, but Nigeria’s vigilant shot-stopper, Jane Ijirigho, produced a breathtaking save to deny the captain and preserve the equilibrium.

Weathering the early Mexican storm, Nigeria gradually found their rhythm and began dictating the tempo of the contest. Their tactical patience yielded gold when Esther Stephen floated a majestic, searching ball deep into the opposition territory. The Mexican defence faltered under the aerial pressure, failing to clear the danger and allowing the ball to fall perfectly into the path of Oluebube Umejiaku.

With ruthless composure, Umejiaku unleashed a bullet into the top corner, leaving the goalkeeper stranded and sending the Nigerian faithful into raptures.

The Flamingoes remained comfortable and doubled their lead through Mary Dunstan, the No 8 smashing home after a Kanyinsola Yusuf cross had only been half-cleared.  However, Emily Delgado pulled a goal back for Mexico deep into injury time, but Nigeria held on for the victory.

What they said…

“When you come into this kind of competition, and you get to the knockout stages, it’s more tactical and there’s a lot of intensity involved because they’re young and anxiety comes because it’s the knockout stage. Today was a tough game, but we’re no pushovers.”– Akeem Busari, Nigeria coach

“I think we have to highlight the team’s commitment and the fact that the players kept fighting until the very end. The most important thing is to learn and grow, helping them develop step by step as Mexican footballers so they can eventually progress to the senior national team.” – Miguel Gamero, Mexico coach
