After six months of being in hiding, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has finally arrested one Nwoku Princewill Uche, a principal suspect in the importation of 451,807 Captagon tablets into Nigeria.
The illegal substances, weighing about 79.119 kilogrammes, were imported into the country in September 2021 but intercepted by NDLEA operatives at Apapa Seaport, Lagos.
A statement by NDLEA spokesman, Femi Babafemi, said the principal suspect has now been taken into custody after six months on the run.
Popularly called ‘Jihadist drug’, the consignment was the first ever recorded seizure of Captagon in West and Central African sub-region.
In his confessional statements to the NDLEA, the 36-year-old suspect claimed to have met the person who gave him the job on LinkedIn while he was paid N5m to clear the container.
According to him, a third party bank account was deployed to process the ‘Form M’ for clearing of the illicit consignment.
The statement said the Chairman and Chief Executive of NDLEA, Brigadier General Mohammed Buba Marwa (rtd), who praised his officers and men for a great job done, charged them and their compatriots across the country to always remain vigilant.
He also said they must remain on the offensive until all drug cartels in Nigeria are completely dismantled.
