Financial Autonomy: Assembly Speakers Meet Governors, Presidency
…Urges PASAN JUSUN to suspend strike
BY ADYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – The leadership of the Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has again met with State Governors, the Chief of Staff to the President, Prof Ibrahim Gambari and the Presidential Technical Committee on the implementation of autonomy of state legislatures and judiciary.
The meeting which took place on Thursday at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, is aimed at finalizing modalities for the implementation of financial autonomy for states’ legislature and judiciary.
Speaking after the meeting, the Chairman of the Conference of Speakers, Hon. Abubakar Y Suleiman, said that remarkable progress has been achieved on the implementation modalities.
Suleiman, who is also the Speaker of the Bauchi State House of Assembly, said that the meeting examined and deliberated on the report of the technical committee for implementation set up by the Presidency.
He said that the report which was presented to the Speakers and Governors is to be further studied for final adoption at the next meeting of the tripartite committee made up of the Presidency, Governors and Speakers on Monday, April 19, 2021.
The Chairman of the Speakers Conference called on the striking staff of the states’ legislature and judiciary to consider the untiring efforts being made to resolve the issues and therefore urged the two bodies to suspend their indefinite strike.
Suleiman assured the Parliamentary Staff Association of Nigeria (PASAN) and Judicial Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) of the resolved of the Conference of Speakers to ensure hitch free implementation modalities, adding that next week’s meeting will be surely remarkable.
