BY EDMOND ODOK – Retiring Executive Chairman of the Federal Inland Revenue Service (FIRS), Muhammad Nami is happy leaving behind a thriving agency with improved capacity to generate revenue into the Federation Account annually.
Excitedly, Nami said the last nine months, spanning January 1 to September 14, 2023, saw the FIRS generating a whopping N8.5 trillion revenue for the country.
Churning out the impressive figure in Abuja on Monday while handing over to Mr Zach Adedeji, the newly appointed Acting Chairman of the Service, Nami said implementable reforms have re-engineered the FIRS operations in line with the assigned mandate when he came on board in December 2019.
Highlighting his achievement during the period under review, outgoing FIRS boss said the Service effectively boosted government revenue profile, adding the impressive figures showed that over 70 per cent of the funds shared during the monthly Federation Account Allocation Committee (FAAC) now come from tax collection nationwide.
In appointing Adedeji, as the FIRS’ Acting Executive Chairman, President Bola Tinubu directed Nami to immediately proceed on a three-month pre-retirement leave, as stipulated by Public Service Rule (PSR) 120243.
Nami’s leave will ultimately result in his eventual retirement from service on December 8, 2023
For Adedeji, his appointment in acting capacity on September 15, 2023, will last for a 90-day period before subsequent confirmation as the Service’s substantive Executive Chairman for a term of four (4) years in the first instance.
