Floods Wash Away Houses, Farmlands In Bauchi

BY ADEYEMI AKANJI, BAUCHI – Not fewer than 2000 houses and other buildings have been destroyed and washed away by flood in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi State following a heavy downpour that lasted for several hours in the area between Wednesday and Thursday last week.

Chairman of the of the Council, Alhaji Garba Musa Bara announced this while conducting Governor Bala Mohammed round some of the affected places in Cheledi on Saturday.

Bara told the Governor that the flood washed away over 5000 farmlands, 2000 houses while properties worth millions of Naira were equally destroyed.

He lamented that many families have now been rendered homeless and are taking refuge in government buildings like schools and other offices, a development he noted may bring untold hardship on the people.

The Council Chairman appealed to Governor Mohammed to immediately come to the aid of the victims by providing relief materials to them in the interim before knowing what to be done as a permanent solution to the problem.

Also Speaking, the member representing Kirfi constituency in the State House of Assembly, Hon. Umar Abdulkadir Dewu called on the government to provide immediate palliative measures for the victims to ease their suffering.

This is just as the communities ravaged by the flood disaster in Kirfi Local Government Area of Bauchi state have appealed to the State Government and relevant authorities to as a matter of urgency take proactive measures that will prevent future occurrence of the incident.

The communities made their feelings known when Governor Bala Mohammed paid a sympathy visit to the area on Saturday to inspect the level of damage caused by the flood.

Responding, Governor Mohammed expressed concern over the incessant cases of flood disaster ravaging communities across the state year in year out and promised to provide lasting solution.

While commiserating with the victims, Mohammed announced the composition of a Committee that would take inventory of all the losses with a view to supporting the affected persons.
