Former Gov. Of Abia State, Dr Ogbonnaya Onu Dies At 71
Former governor of Abia state and former National Chairman of the defunct All Nigeria People’s Party (ANPP), Dr Ogbonnaya Onu is dead.
The First Class graduate of Chemical Engineering from the University of Nigeria Nsukka, known for his simplicity and frankness while alive, according to sources close to the family, died on Thursday morning at a hospital in Abuja at the age of 71years after suffering from stroke on Wednesday from which he did not recover.
Ogbonnaya, who was the immediate past Minister of Science and Technology, contested the 2022 Presidential ticket of the All Progressives Congress (APC) but lost.
It was gathered that he suffered the first bout of partial stroke which he had battled in recent times before the fatal second stroke.
The late Dr Onu was a lecturer at University of Port Harcourt before he left the classroom to join national politics during the transition to civilian rule programme of former military President, General Ibrahim Babangida from 1991 to 1993.
Dr Onu was elected governor in 1992 and served till 1994 when the late General Sani Abacha overthrew late Chief Ernest Shonekan’s Interim National Government (ING) in 1994.
