The award is the brainchild of the world-renowned All Africa Student’s Union (AASU), an International students’ movement in operational relations with UNESCO, ECOWAS, UNICEF, AU and other International Organizations.
The notice of this award to Professor Haruna stated that the honour is in recognition of his commitment, dedication and inspirational leadership in the academic and other personal pursuits, as well as an affirmation of his well-known philanthropic exertions, which have obviously not gone unnoticed.
AASU is the continental representative organization of democratic students’ unions founded in 1972 at the University of Science and Technology, Kumasi, Ghana. It has 54 affiliate unions from Francophone and Anglophone African Countries.
In the letter conveying the nomination of the FUGA Vice Chancellor, the AASU, confirmed that the nomination of Prof. Andrew Haruna was ratified after due consideration and scrutiny at the 62nd Congress of the Union held in Accra, Ghana.
The leadership award is bestowed on corporate entities, institutions, and eminent sons and daughters of Africa, who have distinguished themselves in their various fields. This conferment on Vice Chancellor Andrew Haruna is no exception, as the Student Body continues to pursue aspects of it thereby; to encourage and motivate him to higher excellence, taking holistic cognizance of his past and present exertions as an Administrator, Scholar, Strong Advocate of Peace/Economic Development, Youth Empowerment, Grassroots Educational Development, Philanthropist and Egalitarianism, to all of which he has committed so much in the past, and continues to.
The award plaque and medal of honour will be presented to the Vice Chancellor at the Federal University Gashua, Yobe State in Nigeria tomorrow, Thursday, 9th March, 2017.
The Nigerian representative of the All Africa Students Union will be joined by Executive members drawn from Ghana, Sierra Leone, Libya, Gambia, Liberia and Zimbabwe for the award ceremony.
Professor Haruna joins other illustrious sons of Africa who have received this award before him since its institution 13 years ago, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo (2006), John Kufour and others in 2008.
This is not the first time the Vice Chancellor will be receiving a Kwame Nkrumah leadership award, having earlier received Kwame Nkrumah Exemplary Leadership Honour award from the ECOWAS based West African Students Union parliament.
