BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – Crowned the top-performing African nation at the just-concluded 2026 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow, Scotland, Team Nigeria capped a brilliant campaign by cementing her continental supremacy with a resounding seventh-place overall finish, after scooping 24 medals through fierce powerhouse displays in athletics, weightlifting, judo, and para-sports.
In sealing her stellar performance at the Games, the Nigerian contingent bravely hauled 10 gold, seven silver and seven bronze medals, making it the highest-ranked African nation ahead of South Africa and Kenya.
But overall, it was Australia that asserted its sporting dominance to finish atop the final medal standings, pocketing a spectacular 171 total medals, powered by a commanding 70-gold haul.
In second place came England which mounted a fierce campaign to secure a haul of 110 medals, while, Canada delivered a stellar performance to claim the third spot on the podium, safely ahead of a highly competitive pack as India, Scotland, and New Zealand rounded out the elite top six nations.
For the African continent, Nigeria’s track and field team lit up the arena with historic gold medals as Samuel Ogazi and Ezekiel Nathaniel blazed across the track to claim unforgettable victories in their respective events.
In a spectacular sprint finish, Ogazi carved his name into the history books with a fierce and unstoppable run on the track. After finding his rhythm past a tough opening stretch, he hammered through the final 300 metres with breathtaking power. Bursting clear of the competition on the home straight, he crossed the finish line in an astonishing 44.25 seconds to capture Nigeria’s first-ever men’s 400 metres gold at the Commonwealth Games.
His fellow countryman, Nathaniel also delivered a master-class in speed and grit to conquer the barrier-packed track. Flying over every obstacle with absolute focus, he surged ahead on the final stretch to leave his rivals behind. Clocking a brilliant 48.47 seconds, he secured a dominant victory that crowned him as the first Nigerian man to ever win the Commonwealth 400m hurdles title.
Not done yet, the field events also brought in its goodies with Chukwuebuka Enekwechi capturing Nigeria’s first-ever Commonwealth gold medal in the men’s shot put, while Ruth Usoro earned silver in the women’s long jump with one of the best performances of her career.
Additionally, Udodi Onwuzurike claimed silver in the men’s 200 metres, improving on his sixth-place finish at the Birmingham 2022 Games, while Ella Onojuvwevwo also delivered a historic performance, ending Nigeria’s 32-year wait for a Commonwealth Games medal in the women’s 400 metres by winning bronze.
However, despite the disappointment of not successfully defending her title, World record holder Tobi Amusan added another medal to her decorated career by securing a bronze in the women’s 100m hurdles.
Further contributing to the 24-medal haul, Nigeria’s relay teams, the mixed 4x400m team claimed bronze in the event’s Commonwealth Games debut, while the men’s 4x100m quartet also won bronze after Canada was disqualified following a successful appeal.
Nigeria’s Powerhouses Global Stage
Far beyond the running tracks, there was a fierce and unstoppable wave of Nigerian strength at the Games with its mighty weightlifters shattering records.
The country’s fearless para-athletes redefined human limits, just as the fierce judokas locked horns with the best in the world, combining forces to pile up the medals and prove that Nigeria’s athletic dominance runs deep across every arena.
Gathering Of Elite Athletes
Indeed, the 2026 Glasgow Commonwealth Games brought together elite competitors from over 74 nations and territories. Across 10 intense sports and 215 adrenaline-fueled medal events, a staggering 1,168 gleaming medals were fiercely contested and handed out to many of the planet’s top performers.
Electric Pulse of Victory
Interestingly, during the 11-day festival of grit and glory, over 630,000 roaring fans packed the different venues to watch and cheer the athletes perform.
Similarly, behind the scenes, an army of more than 4,000 dedicated volunteers poured in over 156,000 hours of heart, while the live action captured the imagination of the digital world with nearly half a billion online viewers.
