Osun State Governor, Senator Ademola Adeleke has directed immediate investigation into the case of a young man who was a medical student reportedly sentenced to death by hanging by a court in Osun state for stealing a fowl.
This was contained in a statement on Tuesday, December 17, 2024 by Olawale Rasheed, Spokesperson to Governor Adeleke, saying that the Governor has ordered the Attorney General of the State to immediately intervene in the matter and ensure the young man is listed for prerogative of mercy before the end of the year.
Rasheed said Governor Adeleke received the report of the case of a young man reportedly sentenced to death by hanging in Osun state for stealing a fowl.
Accordingly, the Governor directed the Attorney General and Commissioner for Justice, Osun State to commence full investigation into the matter and initiate processes to grant prerogative of mercy to the young man.
Adeleke said; “Osun is a land of justice and equity and must ensure fairness and protection of the sanctity of lives. I assure members of the public that this matter is receiving my direct attention with every sense of urgency also attached to our response to the matter”.
The distraught parents of the convicted young man had in an interview with actress Biola Adebayo, shared the sad story of how their only son who was a medical student was “falsely” accused of stealing fowl by a policeman and then subsequently sentenced to death by hanging for same crime by a court.
The young man is believed to have already spent 14 years in prison.
