Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State on Wednesday, October 15, 2025 announced his defection from the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), to the All Progressives Congress APC).

Before announcing his defection, Governor Diri formally announced his resignation from the PDP, the platform on which he was elected governor twice.

Curiously, the Speaker of the Bayelsa State House of Assembly, his deputy and 15 of the lawmakers on the platform of the PDP resigned their membership of the PDP to join the APC.

Before Wednesday’s defection, the PDP, the PDP had 17 members of the House of Assembly while the APC had five with APGA having two members, bringing the total to 24 State legislators.

However, following the defection, the APC now has 22 members with APGA left with just two members.

Spokesperson to the governor, Daniel Alabara while confirming the resignation, said that Diri has pitched his tent with the All Progressives Congress (APC), thus ended months of speculations over the possible defection of the governor to the ruling APC.

Governor Diri’s dumping of the PDP barely comes 24 hours after his Enugu State counterpart, Peter Mbah, defected to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC).
