Benue State Governor, Rev. Fr. Hyacinth Alia on Monday, June 8, 2026, at the Old Banquet Hall of the Government House, Makurdi, signed the State Electricity Law 2026 into lay.

The new law is expected to have several positive impacts on the people and economy of Benue State which include; improved power supply, economic growth and job creation, reduced cost of doing business and enhanced consumer protection among others.

On improved power supply, Governor Alia noted that the law will create a legal framework for increased electricity generation, transmission, and distribution within the state, leading to more reliable and stable power supply for homes, businesses, schools, and hospitals.

Alia also noted that improved electricity will attract investors, encourage the establishment of industries and businesses, and create employment opportunities for thousands of Benue residents, particularly youths.

He also said that businesses will spend less on generators, fuel, and alternative power sources, adding that the development will lower production costs, increase profitability, and make locally produced goods more competitive.

The Governor also said that the new law provides mechanisms for enforcing consumer rights, ensuring fair billing practices, improved service delivery, quicker resolution of complaints, and accountability from electricity providers.

Commenting on rural electrification and improved quality of life, Governor Alia said that communities that currently lack access to electricity would benefit from expanded power infrastructure, improving healthcare services, education, agricultural processing, security, and overall living standards across the state.

In the words of Alia; “The law will help deliver more reliable electricity, stimulate economic development, protect consumers, create jobs, and improve the quality of life for residents across Benue State, positioning the state for greater industrialization and sustainable growth”.
