BY EDMOND ODOK – Heavily armed men on Tuesday opened fire on the convoy of President Muhammadu Buhari in Katsina State, leaving two persons injured in the daring attack

The Presidency confirmed last night that the gunmen attack was on the President’s advance team to Katsina State ahead of the Salah celebration.

It also said that two members of the presidential team sustained injuries due to the attack and are currently receiving treatment at an undisclosed hospital.

A statement by Garba Shehu, the Presidential Spokesman, said the country’s number one citizen was not in the convoy at the time of the attack.

He explained that security operatives and an advance team heading for Daura, the President’s hometown, ahead of Sallah, were attacked near Dutsinma in Katsina, adding that the attack was successfully repelled by “gallant presidential guards”.

According to him; “The Presidency has described as sad and unwelcome, the shooting incident near Dutsinma, Katsina State, at the convoy of cars carrying the Advance Team of security guards, protocol and media officers ahead of President, Muhammadu Buhari’s trip to Daura for Sallah.”

“The attackers opened fire on the convoy from ambush positions but were repelled by the Military, Police, and DSS personnel accompanying the convoy. Two persons in the convoy are receiving treatment for the minor injuries they suffered. All the other personnel, staff, and vehicles made it safely to Daura.”

The President Media Aide released the statement moments after news broke that an Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) was killed in Katsina still on Tuesday.
