Gunmen Kill Ogun APC’s Councillorship Candidate In Broad Daylight

Tragedy struck on Saturday, October 12 at Ward 15 in Abeokuta South Local Government Area of Ogun State, as some unidentified gunmen killed a councillorship candidate in the forthcoming November 16 Local Government elections

The victim, Adeyinka Adeleke was the All Progressives Congress (APC) Councillorship candidate for Ward 15 in the forthcoming November 16 Local Government elections in the State.

The incident occurred in the afternoon of Saturday around the Jide Jones area of Abeokuta South and the circumstances surrounding the shooting are still unclear.

Confirming the incident the Spokesperson of the Ogun State Police Command, SP Odutola Omolola, said the assailants who are suspected cultists, arrived in an unregistered Toyota Corolla Sport, armed with a pump action shotgun and a pistol.

Omolola said the assailants opened fire on their victim and left him dead at the scene before zooming off in their waiting vehicle.

A video of the incident which surfaced online showed the lifeless body of Adeleke on the floor with the sympathisers’ voices heard in the background wailing.

Another source, who lamented that the unfortunate incident created palpable tension in the area with residents scampering for safety, said; “The gunmen came in a tinted car, shot him, and hit him with stones till he died. There was tension in the area as people were scampering for safety.”

Also speaking on the incident, an eyewitness, who preferred to remain anonymous, stated that arriving at the scene, one of the assailants stepped out of the tinted car and shot Adeyinka at close range, adding that they later smashed his head to ensure he was dead.

“The Killing happened around 2 pm, it took everybody by surprise… No one knows if it is a cultist attack or not. The people in the area are already locking their shops, everywhere is tensed up now, it is so sad.”

Available information indicated that the victim was a Transport Union worker in the Panseke area of Abeokuta during his lifetime and his death has sent shockwaves through the entire local community.

A Police insider while confirming that the family came to take the corpse away said; “Yes, the incident happened. His family decided to take his body for burial.”
