Gunmen Kill Three Policemen In Enugu
The Police in Enugu Command are hot on the trail of unknown gunmen, who on Saturday attacked and killed three police officers at a police checkpoint in Agbani, a community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of the State
Reports indicated that the gunmen had stormed the checkpoint at about 8 am and opened fire on police officers on duty, killing all three personnel at the spot.
According to the report, it was indeed an unexpected early morning attack on the police checkpoint located close to the Agbani Divisional Police Headquarters.
One of the area’s residents, who simply identified himself as Ifeanyi, gave an account on the attack, saying; “The policemen were busy collecting money from Okada people and bus drivers when the unknown gunmen attacked them. It was so sudden.
“Many of us ran away when we heard the gunmen firing shots. We returned and saw three bodies of the policemen.”
A video clip, apparently shot after the attack, has been circulating on social media with bodies of the two police officers lying on the ground along a major road.
Similarly, another body was seen in front of the Agbani Divisional Police Headquarters with a voice heard in the background of the video clip saying; “Unknown gunmen killed policemen now. One of them escaped, but three were killed. See their corpses here.”
However, calls and WhatsApp messages seeking to extract reaction from the Spokesperson of Enugu Police Command, Daniel Ndukwe, on the unfortunate incident were not responded to as at the time of filing this report.
With an increasing waves of deadly attacks in the South-east region, the latest incident comes barely three weeks after gunmen abducted some returning university students and other travellers in Ekwegbe, a community in Igbo-Etiti Local Government Area of the state.
Mostly targeted at security officials and government facilities, the attacks have been attributed to the outlawed Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) currently agitating for a sovereign state for the Igbo-speaking people in the South East geo-political zone
In October alone, two deadly incidents took place in Enugu State with the first having gunmen attacking an army checkpoint in Amodu Awkunanaw, a community in Nkanu West Local Government Area of Enugu State. Two persons were feared killed in the attack.
The second incident in October had two persons, including a police officer, killed when gunmen attacked Inyi Police Divisional Headquarters in Oji River Local Government Area of Enugu state.
Earlier in September, unknown gunmen killed the wife of a leader of a local vigilante operative in Umuopu, Enugu-Ezike, a community in the Igbo-Eze North Local Government Area of state.
Days after, gunmen also killed three police officers at New Haven, Enugu North Local Government Area of the state.
Earlier in September, gunmen attacked members of the Labour Party (LP) who were holding a meeting in Awgu Community, Awgu Local Government Area of the state.
There was also another incident on August 31 when some Labour Party members were attacked by gunmen in Nenwe, a community in the Aninri Local Government Area of the state, just as unknown gunmen attacked at a police checkpoint along Agbani Road in Enugu South Local Government Area of the state in June with two officers reportedly killed in the process. – Additional reports from Premium Times
