Gunmen Strike Police Post, Kill Policeman, Shot Another In Anambra

No fewer than nine gunmen on Wednesday night shot dead one of the police officers at Nkpor market in Idemili North Local Government Area of Anambra state.
Our correspondent learnt that the deceased, who was keeping surveillance under the fly-over in the area, was killed by the gunmen, while his colleague was shot on the leg.
The robbers, who were operating on three motorcycles, had stormed the police sand bag team stationed in the area at about 8.30pm and opened fire at the officers.
A police source who said the robbers took the police team unawares, disclosed that they collected the Ak-47 rifle of the deceased.
“They first headed towards where the police vehicle was packed and positioned themselves before striking” he said.
He however added that the policeman, who was shot on his leg, succeeded in escaping with his gun as he took cover inside the gutter when he was shot.
It was learnt that the attacked police team were supposed to be on duty at Ukpo, Dunukofia local Government Area as at the time the incident took place.
Confirming the incident, the Ogidi Divisional Police Officer, (DPO), Hassan Musa, said the deceased and the casualty had been taken to Borromeo Hospital.
“We are still at the scene and investigation is ongoing to arrest the fleeing robbers”
Meanwhile, an Idemili-based legal practitioner, Pat Agbata, described the attack as wicked, calling for adequate equipment of the police who he said should also work in synergy with the local vigilant security operatives.
