INEC De-registers 74 Political Parties Leaving 18
BY AMOS DUNIA, ABUJA – The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), on Thursday wielded the big hammer as it announced the de-registration of 74 political parties ahead of the 2023 general elections.
INEC National Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu, who announced the de-registration of the dormant political parties at a press conference, said that with the development, Nigeria now has 18 political parties.
The 18 successful parties that scale the hurdle of de-registration according to Yakubu are Accord Party, Action Alliance, African Action Congress, African Democratic Congress, All Progressives Congress, All Progressives Grand Alliance, Allied Peoples Movement, Labour Party, New Nigeria Peoples Party, National Rescue Movement and the Peoples Democratic Party.
Others include; Peoples Redemption Party, Social Democratic Party, Young Progressives Party and Zenith Labour Party.
The INEC Chairman said that 75 of the political parties failed to satisfy the requirement of remaining political parties, adding however, that one of the affected political parties went to court.
Mahmood explained that the Booth Party, which registered after the 2019 general elections would continue to remain in existence.
