INEC Sets Dates For Ekiti, Osun Governorship Election

The Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof. Mahmood Yakubu, on Friday, May 30, 2025, announced dates for the 2026 governorship elections in Ekiti and Osun States.

Yakubu said that the Ekiti Governorship election will hold on Saturday, June 20, 2026, with party primaries scheduled from October 20 to November 10, 2025.

He also said that the final candidate lists for the Ekiti Governorship would be published on January 18, 2026, while campaigns would commence on January 21, 2026.

Similarly, he said that the Osun State Governorship election date is scheduled for Saturday, August 8, 2026, adding that Party primaries would take place between November 24 and December 15, 2025.

The INEC chairman said that the final list of candidates for the Osun Governorship election would be released on March 9, 2026 while campaigns would kickstart on March 11, 2026.

He said that the detailed schedule has been uploaded on the INEC website and social media handles.

Yakubu acknowledged rising public interest in pending bye-elections and the resumption of Continuous Voter Registration (CVR), particularly ahead of the Anambra governorship election, saying; “We are finalising preparations for both activities. The details will be announced soon”.

In a related development, two recently appointed National Commissioners, Prof. Sunday Nwambam Aja (South East) and Abdulrazak Tukur Yusuf (North West) assumed office.
