BY VICTOR OSOWOCHI – The Super Eagles of Nigeria completed a spectacular second-half comeback to secure a dramatic 3-3 draw against the Russian national team in a thrilling international friendly match played at the Nizhny Novgorod Stadium, Russia.
Looking dead and buried in the first half, the Nigerians defied the hostile home crowd to mount a roaring second-half resurrection with a blistering three-goal counter-offensive.
The exciting friendly exploded into life after the interval as the Eagles refused to fly home defeated and it was an encounter that saw head coach Eric Chelle’s heavily rotated side display incredible resilience trailing 3-1 early in the second half.
Nigeria started the match with high intensity, but defensive vulnerabilities allowed Russia to take firm control before the Super Eagles eventually demonstrated a masterclass in resilience, turning a looming disaster into a spectacular second-half rescue mission.
The proceedings ended in absolute drama as the Super Eagles proved they could fly through any storm. The Super Eagles ignited the match just ten minutes in when Kelechi Iheanacho broke the deadlock. Latching onto a loose ball, the Nigerian forward unleashed a precise, surgical strike from the edge of the box to silence the home crowd and put Nigeria ahead early.
However, the hosts refused to back down, mounting a fierce comeback before the break and in the 30th minute, Lechi Sadulaev exploited a lapse in the Nigerian defense, finding pockets of space deep inside the penalty area to calmly slot home the equaliser. The momentum completely shifted in stoppage time when Matvey Kislyak rose highest to head Russia into the lead at 45+2 minutes, sending the hosts into the dugout with a -1 advantage just before the halftime whistle.
The Russian dominance looked set to seal the match early in the second half as Aleksey Miranchuk capitalised on a swift offensive play in the 54th minute, extending Russia’s lead to a commanding 3-1 shortly after the break.
Refusing to surrender, Nigeria fought their way back into the contest with Osayande Edokpolor giving the Super Eagles a lifeline in the 78th minute. His clinical finishing pulled one back and reduced the deficit to 3-2.
Then, in the dying moments of the match, drama peaked with four minutes into stoppage time (90+4′) as Akor Adams spearheaded a lethal counter-attack, snatching a dramatic, last-gasp equaliser to cap off a thrilling 3-3 draw.
Demonstrating a resilient mentality, this dramatic fightback served as a needed morale booster following Nigeria’s embarrassing 3-0 defeat against Guinea-Bissau in the 2027 AFCON qualifiers. Also, the outing showed squad depth testing for Coach Eric Chelle who used the fixture to test several new players and tactical combinations due to a heavily depleted squad.
For both countries’ head-to-head history, this result ensures Nigeria remains unbeaten across their two senior international meetings with Russia, following their previous 1-1 draw in June 2025. – With agency reports
