Irate Youths Set Police Station Ablaze In Ondo

Following unconfirmed allegation of torture that led to the death of an arrested suspect by the personnel of the Nigeria Police Force, some irate youth in Ifon, headquarters of Ose local government area of Ondo State, chased away policemen on duty and set the station servicing the town on fire.

One version of the account said that the anger of the irate youth stem from the arrest and alleged tortured to death of a young boy by the police.

The development, it was gathered enraged the youths in the community who quickly mobilised and protested the killing of the young boy to the police station, during which they allegedly chased away policemen on duty and set ablaze the police station.

However, another account indicated that some young individuals got into fisticuffs on Valentine’s Day which led one of the groups to go to the police station and reported the incident, following which led to the arrest of two members of the opposing camp.

It was further gathered that two of the arrested persons were allegedly tortured which resulted in the death of one of two in his cell on Saturday morning while the second was later rushed to the hospital, but in coma.

Accordingly, the group that lost their friend and family members reacted angrily by going to the home of the individual who reported them to the police, where they set the house ablaze.

Not done with their action, they proceeded to the Divisional Police Station, Ifon and chased away all the officers, including the Divisional Police Officer, and later set the station on fire.
It was further gathered that the angry group gathered on Sunday morning to continue their protest but, met with a team of policemen that were dispatched to restore order during which another youth allegedly lost his life in the encounter.

The commissioner of police for Ondo State, CP Wilfred Olatokunbo Afolabi is believed to have visited the scene to access the situation.

However, efforts made to reach the state Police Public Relations Officer, Funmilayo Odunlami to speak on the development were unsuccessful as she did not pick her calls.
