Angry fans slam David De Gea as keeper’s howler gifts Chelsea 3-1 victory over Man United at Wembley
Oliver Giroud…Chelsea goal scorer
Manchester United fans were left furious with Club’s goalkeeper, David De Gea as his howler gifted Chelsea a smooth passage into this year’s FA Cup final against Arsenal at the Wembley stadium.
With the fans’ confidence in the Spaniard plummeting to new depths during his thoroughly uninspiring performance on Sunday evening, the consensus among many Old Trafford devotees is that: ‘De Gea is finished’.
The Spaniard was so disappointing in being unable to keep Mason Mount’s long-range shot after just a minute of play in the second half.
Brandon Williams’ loose pass was picked up by Mason Mount, who charged at the Red Devils’ goal before releasing a pile driver from about 30 yards.
The low shot appeared to be fully covered by the Spanish goalkeeper. but his lame push to the left only helped the ball into the back of United’s net.
It meant a second goal for the Blues to accompany Olivier Giroud’s first-half strike and the United faithful became unrestrained venting their fury at the United No 1 goalkeeper.
That blunder was the last straw for many United fans and expectedly, the Spain international was roundly mocked on social media.
With the anger towards him Intensifying, this howler was enough to convince many Red Devils supporters that he is no longer worthy of a shirt in Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s starting XI.
Unfortunately, the misery continued for De Gea and United as the 29-year-old hardly covered himself in glory in the 74th minute wjth United centre-back Harry Maguire diverting the ball into his own net to put Chelsea 3-0 up.
United managed to narrow the deficit when Bruno Fernandes converted a penalty towards the end, but the damage had been done and De Gea will be stuck with a lot of the blame.
No doubt, the shot stopper has gone from club icon to the most maligned player in the side with severe criticisms for a sharp decline in form.
“De Gea should be called De Hole,” one supporter said.
Another commented: “I am done defending De Gea.”
While a third suggested it was time for the United shot-stopper, who has made more than 400 appearances for the Old Trafford side, to move on.
“I’ve had enough of De Gea mistakes. Replace him before his legacy is ruined,” they said.
And a fourth added: ““De Gea, thanks for the second placed finish in 17/18 but it’s time to get the f*** out of my club you useless b******.”
The Spaniard pushed Mason Mount’s shot straight into the net to double the Blues’ lead in the semi-final
A fifth suggested who should replace the 29-year-old, with: “Dean Henderson in, De Gea out.”
The Englishman has enjoyed an impressive season on loan from Old Trafford with Sheffield United, leading to speculation he would replace the Spaniard.
Another United fan said on Twitter: “De Gea has been bad for years now.”
With a seventh holding nothing back as they wrote: “De Gea isn’t even better than Tim Krul, he’s finished.”
The shot-stopper has made more than 400 appearances for United –but fans think his time at Old Trafford is up.
From the eighth fan, it is advice that manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer change his transfer priorities this summer.
Voicing the concerns of many die hard supporters, the fan said that bringing Dean Henderson back from his loan spell at Sheffield United and doing away with De Gea this summer should be United’s number one transfer priority.
Another fan simply wrote: “This is the end for De Gea.”
The fans’ tantrums are coming just weeks after United legend, Roy Keane, blasted the goalkeeper for a similar gaffe against Tottenham Hotspur.
De Gea has suffered heavy criticisms throughout the season for his lacklustre performances.
Speaking on Sky Sports, the former midfielder said: “I am sick to death of this goalkeeper. I would be flying in at half time. I would be swinging punches at that guy.
“This is a standard save for a standard, international goalkeeper. I am flabbergasted. There’s got to be some stuff going on at half-time.”
“De Gea is the most overrated goalkeeper I’ve seen in a long long time”, Keane said
