BY SEGUN ADEBAYO, ABUJA – Contrary to expectations, the Kaduna State Independent Electoral Commission (Kad-SIECON) on Friday made a tactical retreat as it announced the indefinite suspension of the earlier schedule December 30, 2017 local government elections.

Chairperson of the commission, Mrs. Saratu Dikko, who announced the new position of the Commission shortly after attending an emergency meeting with members of the State House of Assembly Committee on Judiciary in Kaduna, said “the elections have been postponed.’’

Dikko explained that the postponement became necessary as the State legislature is yet to pass the new law to guide the elections.

According to her; “So when the law is passed and signed into law by the governor, we will make a new announcement on the election.”

Speaking in the same vein, Chairman of the House Committee, Mr Kantiok Ishaku, said it was not proper for the commission to have announced a date for local council elections when the House was yet to conclude work on the law for the election.

Ishaku further said; “We have told them to tarry a while until the necessary amendment to the Independent Electoral Commission Law of 2012 is concluded.”
