As part of its proactive measures to keep Kaduna State clean and make the environment safer for its residents, the Kaduna Capital Territory Authority (KCTA) has engaged the services of 13 firms to handle refuse evacuation across the entire state.

According to the Assistant Director of Municipal Waste Management (KCTA), Dr Haira’u Umar, the development is meant to manage the huge volume of waste being generated in the state due to its population density and land mass.

He said in an interview on Tuesday in Kaduna that “Before the authority was established, evacuation of waste was done by only one company. This move is to ensure efficiency”.

Umar said the 13 companies were engaged to handle refuse collections across the three metropolitan cities of Kaduna, Zaria, and Kafanchan, adding that the Agency’s proactive environmental sensitisation programmes had positively affected the sanitary habits of the residents.

Similarly, the Assistant Director stated that; “The result of this is that the state only experienced flash flooding during the year. We shall soon commence door-to-door waste collection through the Polluter Pay Principle. This policy will soon begin in all the metropolitan cities”.

He said the State government had shown enormous commitment towards the dredging of rivers and clearing water channels to ensure the free flow of rainwater, adding that; “The dredging of rivers around flood-prone communities will be a continuous process in order to avert flooding in the state”. – NAN report
