BY SALISU IBRAHIM, KANO – The wind of political maneuverings blowing across the country ruffled feathers in Kano on Monday as the State House of Assembly ousted its Speaker, Alhaji Abdullahi Ata and immediately endorsed the return to office of his predecessor, Alhaji Kabiru Alhassan Rurum.

Resuming from their two months vacation, the lawmakers approved the House leadership change in a motion for Ata’s removal by Malam Labaran Madari, representing Warawa Constituency. He was sacked along with two other Principal Officers of the House.

In July 2017, Alhaji Rurum had tendered his resignation as Speaker following claims that he received N100m bribe from a well-known businessman to scuttle the then probe of Muhammadu Sanusi II, the Emir of of Kano.

Following threats to sack the Speaker in May this year, the Assembly went on two months recess as Governor Abdullahi Ganduje intervened to calm frayed nerves and pacify aggrieved members over the issue.

Though there was a minor shake-up that saw the Deputy Speaker resigning and being replaced by one of the Principal Officers, the impeachment move refused to abate as members quickly re-opened the issue at their resumption on Monday, July 30, 2018.

According to NAN reports, the new Speaker Rurum has already taken over the baton, presiding over the House plenary at its resumption on Monday
