Kano Collapsed Building: Two Persons Confirmed Dead, Seven Rescued


BY SALISU IBRAHIM, KANO – Two people have been confirmed dead in the three-storey building that collapsed at the GSM Market, Beirut Road, Kano Metropolis on Tuesday just as seven of the victims trapped in the rubbles were rescued alive.

A Staff of Kano Electricity Distribution Company, (KEDCO), was one of the persons that reportedly died in the collapsed building while carrying out an assignment.

Secretary of the Nigerian Red Cross, Kano Branch, Alhaji Musa D. Abdullahi, confirmed the death of the KEDCO staff, identified as Ya’u Abdullahi.

Musa Abdullahi said; “The KEDCO staff died when he was trying to disconnect the building from the high tension but unfortunately, the power that was already shut down from the transformer, technically relayed back and trapped him which led to his death on the spot”.

Funeral for the late KEDCO staff had since been observed in accordance with Islamic tenets at his residence in Kabuga Housing Estate in the early hours of Wednesday.

A statement by Dr. Nuradeen Abdullahi, Territorial Coordinator of the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA), said that the corpse of the other persons that died in the collapsed building have been evacuated to the morgue at the Murtala Muhammad Specialist Hospital, Kano.

He said; “One person died, while six others sustained minor injuries and had been treated and discharged and another one sustained multiple fractures”.
