Kano Governorship Tribunal Judgement: Rape On Democracy – Coalition Says
The Coalition for Democratic Right, a political pressure group, has expressed concern and disappointment over the recent judgment of the Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal in favour of the All Progressives Congress (APC) and against the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP).
It particularly said that it was essential that the people have faith in the electoral process, adding that this can only be achieved through transparency, accountability, and a commitment to justice.
The judgement sacked the leadership of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf of the NNPP and declared Dr. Nasiru Yusuf Gawuna of APC as winner of the March 2023 governorship election.
However, the Coalition in a statement by Ibrahim Babayo, Director of Strategic Communications, noted that the judgement has raised serious questions about respect for the people’s mandate during a contested electoral process and rape of the principles of democracy.
Babayo further said; “The democratic process is the cornerstone of our nation, and it is imperative that every citizen’s vote is treated with respect and fairness.
“Any allegations of misconduct or irregularities during elections must be thoroughly investigated and addressed through a transparent and impartial judicial system.
“The Kano State Governorship Election Petition Tribunal’s role in ensuring justice and upholding the rule of law is of paramount importance.
“We call upon all stakeholders, including the judiciary, the electoral commission, political parties, and the public, to display the highest level of integrity, fairness, and adherence to the rule of law in discharging their constitutional responsibilities,” he said.
Babayo also said that the credibility of our democratic institutions hinged on the ability to operate without bias or prejudice, adding that all respondent file and appeal are currently awaiting hearing.
“We urge the appellate court to conduct a thorough review of the Kano State Gubernatorial Election Petition Tribunal’s judgment to ascertain its fairness and adherence to due process.
“We also implore all political actors and parties to respect the rule of law and refrain from any actions that may incite violence or undermine the peace and stability of our great nation.
“We emphasize the need for all stakeholders to discharge their constitutional responsibilities with a deep sense of justice and a fear of God.
“Our democracy thrives when it is built on the principles of fairness, accountability, and transparency. We remain committed to upholding these principles and ensuring that the voice of the people is heard and respected,” he declared.
