Kidnapping: Taraba LG Boss Restricts Motorcycle Operators To Only Day Time

BY AMEH IDUJAGI, JALINGO – The Caretaker Chairman of Takum Local Government Council of Taraba State, Mr Shiban Tikari, on Saturday imposed restriction of the use of motorcycles in the area.

This is just as the Taraba State Police command on Friday paraded five suspected kidnappers and four Cattle rustlers and other suspected criminals.

Based on the restriction order which is aimed at checking and reducing the incidence of kidnapping and armed robbery, motorcycles are no longer allowed to operate beyond 7: 00pm within the Local Government Area.

Tikari, who announced this at a media briefing in Jalingo, said kidnapping for ransom and armed robbery have become a daily affairs in the Local Government particularly with the use of motorcycles hence the decision to ban the use of the mode of transportation in the area from 7pm to 6 am.

The Chairman lamented that in some cases, those kidnapped and ransom paid ended up being killed by their abductors, adding that many are still being held after payment of ransom, describing the situation as really worrisome.

While commending the efforts of the Taraba and Benue governors in ending trans-border crimes, the Local Government boss cautioned against politicizing the issue of insecurity in the area.

He further said; “I want to appeal to all patriotic and peace loving people of Takum LGA including those from the neighbouring communities where these criminality is taking place to be more vigilant and help us and the security agencies with intelligence to check the menace.

“Security is our collective responsibility and is high time we all stood up and take positive steps towards tackling the security challenges in our dear local government.

“All perpetrators of these criminal acts are hereby advised to repent and desist from their criminal acts as the arm of the law will catch up with them if they fail to heed.”

The Caretaker Chairman appreciated the roles of security agencies, traditional rulers, youth and religious leaders in ending insecurity in the area.

Tikari called on the people to intensify prayers and intelligence in dealing with the issue of kidnapping and armed robbery in the area. 

Meanwhile, the Taraba State Police Command on Friday announced the arrest of five suspected kidnappers in the state. 

The State Commissioner of Police, Mr Alkasim Sanusi, who paraded the suspects at the command headquarters in Jalingo, warned criminals to leave the state, saying there is no more hiding place for them.

Sanusi said that the suspected kidnappers were arrested by the Special Anti-Robbery Squad (SARS) operatives when they went to collect ransom.

The Police Commissioner said; “The five suspected kidnappers were arrested when they went to collect ransom with a stolen motor cycle. The suspects are at the moment helping us with useful information to enable us arrest their colleagues at large.”

Sanusi urged victims of kidnappers across the state to visit the state headquarters to identify their abductors in custody just as he advised the people of the state to always summon courage to inform the police any time ransom is demanded by kidnappers. 

The police boss also paraded four cattle rustlers, who he said have been wreaking havoc on cow owners in the state. 

He said that 58 cows were recovered from the four suspects which would be handed over to their owners. 

Sanusi appealed to the people of the state to always provide timely information to the police to enable the command cub kidnapping and other criminal activities in the state.

Forefront News reports that following frequent cases of kidnapping in Jalingo and other Local Government Areas in the state, civil servants no longer go to offices, while those with flashy vehicles have moved the vehicles from their houses.

Over 20 cases of kidnapping cases are reported on weekly basis in Taraba with Takum being Governor Ishaku’s Local Government topping the list.
