Former Governor of Anambra State, Mr. Peter Obi, who is the presumed presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) for the 2027 election has described the recent abduction and killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of elderly woman as “shattering” and symptomatic of deeper societal decay.
He pointedly said that if atrocities of this nature no longer compel us to act, then we risk losing the very humanity that binds us as a nation.
Obi in a post on his official X account which was later confirmed by Ibrahim Umar, Spokesperson of Peter Obi Media Reach (POMR), stated that some events shatter a society so deeply that words fall short, stressing that the brutal killing of a teacher and the rape and murder of an elderly woman are among such tragedies.
He noted that these are not isolated incidents, but signs of a wider moral and social breakdown.
Obi asked; “How did we reach a point where teachers are targeted and killed, and the elderly—custodians of memory and wisdom—are subjected to such dehumanizing violence?
“This goes beyond a security failure. It is a collapse of our shared humanity. We have become desensitized, absorbing tragedy briefly before moving on, and allowing indifference to make the unacceptable seem normal.
“To the families affected, I share in your grief. But grief alone is not enough.
“We must demand accountability and urgent, systemic change. If atrocities of this nature no longer compel us to act, then we risk losing the very humanity that binds us as a nation,” he stated.
