Kogi/Bayelsa Poll: It’s Clear We Don’t Have Democracy – Moghalu
BY VICTOR BUORO, ABUJA – Former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), and Presidential candidate of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), in the 2019 election, Professor Kingsley Moghalu has declared that with the conduct of elections in Kogi and Bayelsa states last weekend, it is clear that Nigeria does not have a democracy.
This is as he condemned in strong terms the conduct of the November 16 governorship election in the two states, stressing that what transpired during the Kogi and Bayelsa States election, clearly indicate that we don’t have a democracy.
He noted that the election in both states were marred by violence, ballot box snatching among other vices that were totally uncalled for in an election.
Moghalu noted that the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), had declared 30 of its ad-hoc staff that participated in Saturday’s governorship election in Olamaboro Local Government Area (LGA) of Kogi state, missing.
INEC on Sunday morning through the Local Government Area Electoral Officer in charge of collating and announcing results, Garba Mahmood announced the missing staff after some police officers raised concern that they were last seen shortly after voting ended at 2:00pm.
Senator Dino Melaye also announced the death of his nephew, Olorunjuwon, who was shot by unknown gunmen at his polling unit during Saturday’s election.
Moghalu in his Twitter account, advocated for a solution to electoral crisis, stressing that electronic voting and an overhaul of the INEC are critical to finding solution to the current electoral problems.
According to Moghalu; “We should stop deceiving ourselves. We need fundamental electoral reform in Nigeria; digital/electronic voting, overhaul of INEC. Until that happens.” he left it hanging.
