The former governor of Plateau State, Mr. Simon Lalong,  was on Wednesday sworn into office as the Senator representing Plateau South senatorial district.

His oath of office and allegiance was administered on him by the Clerk of the Senate, Mr. Chinedu Akubueze, to represent Plateau South in the Senate.

Lalong was declared winner of the February 25, 2023 National Assembly election by the Court of Appeal following which he resigned his position as Minister of Labour and Employment to become a lawmaker.

The immediate past governor of Plateau State had filed a petition challenging the declaration of Napoleon Bali of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) as the winner of the senatorial election by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).

Lalong had prayed the Tribunal to nullify Bali’s election on the basis that the PDP did not hold a proper party primary owing to its lack of a structure thus, could not file candidates for the election.

The tribunal, in a unanimous judgement read by Justice Muhammad Tukur, said the PDP, having no structure, lacked the right to have taken part in the election.
