Former Director-General of the Labour Party (LP) Presidential Campaign Council, Doyin Okupe, has confirmed his release from the custody of the  Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC).

Okupe was arrested by the Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday morning at the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Ikeja, Lagos.

Spokesperson of the DSS, Dr Peter Afunanya, who confirmed the arrest, said Okupe was arrested at the instance of the anti-graft agency and immediately handed over to them.

However, in a tweet few minutes ago, Dr Okupe confirmed being released from EFCC custody.

He tweeted: “I was arrested & detained @ the MM int airport, Lagos this morning 12th Jan on my way to UK for medicals, yrs after my passport was withheld by the FHC Abuja. I just left the efcc office where snr officers in lagos & Abuja apologised to me for the error. OCCUPATIONAL HAZZARD abi?”

Earlier in the day, the DSS had confirmed arresting Okupe in terse statement by its Spokesman, Dr Peter Afunanya.

According to the statement, Okupe was picked up at Terminal 1 of the Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos, and promptly delivered to the EFCC as requested.

The statement said; “Doyin Okupe was intercepted by the DSS at Terminal 1 of Murtala Mohammed International Airport, Lagos this morning at the instance of the EFCC.

“He has long been handed over to the Commission which requested for the action. Okupe was billed to fly to London via Virgin Atlantic.”

The former Senior Special Assistant (SSA) on Media to ex-President Goodluck Jonathan was in the news recently when on Monday, December 19, 2022 the Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, sentenced him to two years in prison.

In the judgment delivered by Justice Ijeoma Ojukwu, the Court convicted Okupe, who was then the Director General of the Presidential Campaign Council of the Labour Party, for acting in breach of the money laundering Act.
