Man City Pocket Carabao Cup, Beat Tottenham 1-0
Still in the race to nick a treble this season, Manchester City have taken the first assured step by winning the Carabao Cup final against Tottenham Hotspur at Wembley on Saturday evening.
Tottenham’s interim boss, Ray Mason, who got his managerial career off to a winning start with a late victory over Southampton in their midweek Premiership tie, was undone by a late Aymeric Laporte goal.
It proved another sweet win for City that have made the competition their own in recent seasons; winning four of the last five editions, and moving level with Liverpool as the most successful team in the tournament’s history after lifting the cup for the eighth time.
For Tottenham, the misery continued as they extended their 13-year trophy drought, having not won any silverware since beating Chelsea in the 2008 final.
It has been a turbulent week for both clubs, who were part of the proposed European Super League breakaway, but even more so for Spurs, managed by 29-year-old interim boss Mason after Jose Mourinho was sacked on Monday.
The Cup final was an entirely different test for Mason and Tottenham. Though their top striker Harry Kane had returned, City deserved their victory on the night.
